Why the medicine name matters

Temazepam is mainly processed by conjugation. The frequently cited St John’s wort study measured alprazolam, whose CYP3A metabolism differs. It is not a direct temazepam test.

Extracts are not interchangeable

Another study using a low-hyperforin St John’s wort product found little effect on alprazolam exposure. These preparation differences make broad predictions about all products unreliable.

A dosing gap is not established

Bring the herb’s exact extract and dose to the pharmacist. No validated interval shows that spacing St John’s wort from temazepam prevents an interaction.
