Research summary published · Prepared · Editorial update

The short answer

Caffeine can disrupt sleep, but an exact study did not show that it prevents temazepam from working. Review caffeine habits if sleep remains poor rather than increasing the sleeping medicine.

What this answer covers

Oral caffeine and temazepam for short-term insomnia; stimulant sleep effects are distinct from reduced drug absorption.

Supplement or preparation
Caffeine
Medication ingredient
temazepam

What the direct study found

Caffeine disrupted sleep in eight healthy young men. When temazepam was added, the caffeine-related disturbance was almost completely reversed. This finding does not support saying that caffeine simply blocks temazepam.

Sleep disruption is different from absorption

The study measured sleep, not temazepam concentrations or intestinal absorption. It cannot define how a particular caffeine habit changes your medicine level.

Review persistent insomnia

Tell the prescriber about coffee, energy products, caffeine supplements and sleep patterns. Temazepam is labeled for short-term treatment; continued sleep problems need reassessment rather than extra doses.

Keep treatment changes supervised

Follow the prescribed temazepam plan. Do not take extra doses to counter a supplement, and do not stop regular treatment abruptly. Ask the prescriber to plan any medication or supplement changes.

Evidence and practical considerations

Absorption & effectiveness

Caffeine-induced insomnia is documented, but temazepam largely reversed it in the small direct experiment. The broad reduced-effectiveness/absorption claim is insufficient.

Exact scope
Oral caffeine and temazepam for short-term insomnia; stimulant sleep effects are distinct from reduced drug absorption. with Exact oral temazepam; no blanket benzodiazepine metabolic or route transfer.
Medication form and route
oral; other cannabis routes only if explicitly discussed
Timing or duration
Exact duration and dose depend on source; single-dose and chronic use are distinguished.

What remains uncertain

  • Eight healthy men in an experimental model; no drug levels, long-term outcome or safe caffeine cutoff established.

Factors that may matter: preparation and plant part; dose; other medicines; baseline alertness; clinical indication.

Research conclusion: insufficient evidence · Evidence assessment: low

Population: Patients prescribed oral temazepam.

CNS depression, impaired coordination and alertness can occur; concomitant CNS depressants require caution. Dependence and withdrawal risks require individualized tapering rather than abrupt cessation. Metabolized primarily through conjugation with no active metabolites; not an alprazolam CYP3A profile. Complex sleep behaviors can occur and CNS depressants may increase their risk.

How this applies: Exact RxNorm ingredient and oral formulation confirmed in original label; use exact indication and metabolic boundaries.

Does not quantify the requested botanical interaction risks, prove every herb is sedating, or establish a protective supplement interval.

Source 2: original human study

Population: Eight healthy young men studied overnight.

Caffeine disrupted sleep; temazepam coadministration almost completely restored the caffeine-induced sleep disturbance.

How this applies: Apply only to exact medication, preparation and study exposure; comparator treatment is not co-use.

Small experimental model, no drug concentration measurement. Does not establish reduced temazepam absorption or justify taking more hypnotic to offset caffeine.
