The short answer
Curcumin may affect glucose control. Review the product before combining it with empagliflozin; the exact added low-blood-sugar risk has not been measured.
What this answer covers
Concentrated curcumin; nano-micellar preparations are distinguished from turmeric food and other extracts.
- Supplement or preparation
- Curcumin
- Medication ingredient
- empagliflozin
What the human evidence shows
A small trial of nano-micellar curcumin improved HbA1c compared with placebo. It did not establish the added low-blood-sugar risk with empagliflozin.
Why your treatment context matters
Empagliflozin particularly increases low-blood-sugar risk when combined with insulin or insulin-releasing medicines. It should not be assumed to behave like those medicines by itself. The prescriber should consider the full regimen, meals and prior low readings before deciding whether additional monitoring is useful.
Check the supplement preparation
Check the curcumin amount and delivery system. A nano-micellar trial cannot define the effect of turmeric seasoning or every turmeric extract.
Keep the prescribed medicine plan
Keep the prescribed empagliflozin plan. Tell the clinician about illness, reduced food intake, vomiting or diarrhea; this medicine also has dehydration and ketoacidosis precautions. Do not change fluid, salt or medicine doses to compensate for a supplement yourself.
Watch for low blood sugar
Follow your existing glucose-monitoring and low-blood-sugar treatment plan. New sweating, shakiness, hunger or confusion warrants a glucose check when possible. Severe confusion, a seizure or inability to swallow safely needs emergency help.
Evidence and practical considerations
Side effects & toxicity
Conditional glucose-monitoring concern follows from supplement glucose effects and the exact medicine context. This is not direct evidence of increased hypoglycemia or altered drug absorption.
- Exact scope
- Concentrated curcumin; nano-micellar preparations are distinguished from turmeric food and other extracts. with Exact empagliflozin single-ingredient oral tablets. Exact RxNorm IN1545653 empagliflozin; single-ingredient oral tablets. Combination medicines are not assumed equivalent.
- Medication form and route
- oral
- Timing or duration
- Source-specific single-dose, repeated-dose and observational exposures distinguished.
What remains uncertain
- No exact pair human interaction trial identified. Preparation-specific positive and null results do not establish a universal effect, safe dose, spacing rule or drug concentration change.
Factors that may matter: preparation and plant part; clinical indication; dose; other medicines; baseline glucose and nutrient status.

Population: People prescribed empagliflozin.
Glucosuria and volume-depletion/ketoacidosis precautions; hypoglycemia risk particularly with insulin or secretagogues.
How this applies: Exact RxNorm IN1545653 empagliflozin; single-ingredient oral tablets. Combination medicines are not assumed equivalent.
No universal supplement dose, interval, event rate or untested formulation equivalence.
Source 2: original human study
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov · Source check Sep 11, 2026
Population: Seventy adults with type 2 diabetes in randomized trial.
Between-group changes supported an HbA1c benefit. Fasting glucose improvement was reported within the curcumin group, not among the significant between-group comparisons.
How this applies: Only the named drug, preparation, route and measured endpoints apply.
No verified empagliflozin co-use or exact-pair hypoglycemia endpoint. Nano-curcumin cannot stand for culinary turmeric or every extract.
