What timing is supported?

Take the oral antibiotic at least one hour before or two hours after a short-acting bicarbonate antacid, as directed in the cefuroxime-axetil label. If bicarbonate is prescribed regularly for another condition, ask the treating team to reconcile the schedule rather than changing that treatment yourself.

What did the human study test?

The 1984 experiment used six volunteers and combined sodium bicarbonate with ranitidine to alter gastric pH. It did not isolate bicarbonate. The available author abstract was truncated, so this article does not repeat secondary reports of a numerical cefuroxime reduction; the inspected antibiotic label supports the precaution.

Why not use the test-tube result as proof?

Another paper studied cefuroxime sodium mixed with antacids in vitro. That is not an oral-axetil absorption study. Neither that experiment nor the combined human regimen establishes the same effect for food amounts, intravenous bicarbonate or injected cefuroxime.
