The short answer

Passionflower and oxazepam have been compared as separate treatments, but those studies do not establish that taking them together is safe or requires a specific interval.

What this answer covers

Oral Passiflora incarnata extract/aerial-part preparations; not other species or unidentified mixtures.

Supplement or preparation
Passiflora incarnata
Medication ingredient
oxazepam

The oxazepam study compared alternatives

In a small anxiety trial, patients received either passionflower extract with placebo tablets or oxazepam with placebo drops. More job-performance impairment occurred with oxazepam, but the active treatments were not taken together.

Other studies do not resolve co-use

A short perioperative passionflower study did not show added sedation with its preparation. The monograph also lists no reported interactions. Neither establishes long-term safety with oxazepam.

Do not substitute or space on your own

Bring the exact extract to the prescriber before changing anxiety treatment. The comparison trial does not justify replacing oxazepam yourself or using an invented interval between the two.

Protect your alertness

Oxazepam can impair coordination and alertness. Avoid driving when affected. Seek urgent help for severe difficulty waking or breathing, and tell the prescriber about all other sedating medicines and alcohol.

Evidence and practical considerations

Side effects & toxicity

Exact co-use sedation and avoid/separate claims remain insufficient; the direct comparison is not a combination trial.

Exact scope
Oral Passiflora incarnata extract/aerial-part preparations; not other species or unidentified mixtures. with Exact oral oxazepam; no blanket benzodiazepine metabolic or route transfer.
Medication form and route
oral; other cannabis routes only if explicitly discussed
Timing or duration
Exact duration and dose depend on source; single-dose and chronic use are distinguished.

What remains uncertain

  • Small comparator study, no combined arm; monograph lists no reported interactions and short studies cannot settle chronic co-use safety.

Factors that may matter: preparation and plant part; dose; other medicines; baseline alertness; clinical indication.

Research conclusion: insufficient evidence · Evidence assessment: low

Source 1: current product label

dailymed.nlm.nih.gov · Source check Sep 10, 2026

Population: Patients prescribed oral oxazepam.

CNS depression, impaired coordination and alertness can occur; concomitant CNS depressants require caution. Dependence and withdrawal risks require individualized tapering rather than abrupt cessation. A single major inactive glucuronide metabolite is excreted in urine. CYP3A interactions measured with alprazolam cannot simply be assigned to oxazepam.

How this applies: Exact RxNorm ingredient and oral formulation confirmed in original label; use exact indication and metabolic boundaries.

Does not quantify the requested botanical interaction risks, prove every herb is sedating, or establish a protective supplement interval.

Source 2: official guidance

ema.europa.eu · Source check Sep 10, 2026

Population: People considering the specified supplement.

Traditional sleep-aid use; may impair driving. Section 4.5 lists no reported interactions.

How this applies: Preparation-specific context; not a directly measured oxazepam interaction.

Traditional-use monograph, not a oxazepam trial. No reported interaction is not proof of safety.

Source 3: original human study

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov · Source check Sep 10, 2026

Population: Thirty-six outpatients with generalized anxiety.

Anxiety outcomes did not differ significantly at the end; more job-performance impairment was reported with oxazepam.

How this applies: Apply only to exact medication, preparation and study exposure; comparator treatment is not co-use.

Active products were alternatives, not coadministered. Small study cannot establish combination safety.

Source 4: randomized placebo-controlled trial

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov · Source check Sep 10, 2026

Population: 60 adults undergoing ambulatory surgery.

Anxiety decreased, but sedation and psychomotor recovery were similar between groups.

How this applies: Preparation-specific context; not a directly measured oxazepam interaction.

Short perioperative exposure to one product, no oxazepam; does not establish chronic combination safety.
