A concentrated extract produced a signal

A year-long trial of high-dose green-tea extract found more ALT elevations and nausea than placebo. Overall adverse-event and serious-event proportions did not significantly differ.

It was not a canagliflozin interaction trial

The result concerns the extract’s own safety. It cannot quantify additional toxicity caused by canagliflozin or demonstrate that the drug raises catechin exposure.

Do not infer the risk from the botanical name

The tested concentrated catechin exposure is different from a cup of tea or every leaf-extract capsule. Caffeine content also cannot be assumed from the name.

Review the product and symptoms

Discuss high-dose extract use and new symptoms with the clinician. Canagliflozin has separate volume-depletion precautions; these do not prove additive extract toxicity or establish a safe supplement dose.

SGLT2 inhibition increases urinary glucose. Volume contraction can cause hypotension or acute kidney injury, with risk modifiers. UGT inducers may lower drug exposure and effectiveness. Insulin/secretagogue co-use increases hypoglycemia risk.
