The short answer

Green tea leaf extract may add unwanted stimulation during terbutaline treatment. Review the dose and preparation; the exact combination risk is not measured.

What this answer covers

Camellia sinensis leaf extract; caffeine-containing and decaffeinated extracts are distinct.

Supplement or preparation
Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract
Medication ingredient
terbutaline

Why the combination needs review

Terbutaline can cause tremor and cardiovascular effects. Caffeine can cause palpitations, anxiety and sleep disturbance. Their overlapping effects justify checking symptoms and intake, without assuming every combination is harmful.

Check the product

Check the caffeine amount per serving. A concentrated extract can also have separate liver or blood-pressure concerns; a decaffeinated extract does not automatically share caffeine effects.

The human study did not test combination safety

A series of experiments compared effects of oral terbutaline and caffeine on muscle performance. It did not show that taking them together is safe or quantify an interaction.

Keep the route and dose clear

The reviewed US products are sulfate tablets and subcutaneous injection. Human inhalation and intravenous studies are identified separately. Do not change the medicine dose or substitute a stimulant supplement for asthma treatment.

Respond to new symptoms

Report troublesome tremor, palpitations or weakness after a product change. Chest pain, fainting, a sustained irregular heartbeat or severe breathing difficulty needs urgent assessment. More frequent terbutaline use can indicate worsening asthma and needs a treatment review.

Evidence and practical considerations

Side effects & toxicity

Conditional concern rests on terbutaline cardiovascular/CNS effects and caffeine-containing supplement effects. Original muscle research compared oral drugs rather than establishing combined toxicity. A routine need to separate or avoid every caffeine exposure is not proven.

Exact scope
Camellia sinensis leaf extract; caffeine-containing and decaffeinated extracts are distinct. with Exact terbutaline sulfate oral tablets and subcutaneous injection. Exact RxNorm IN10368, sulfate oral tablet and subcutaneous injection. Intravenous and inhaled research exposures are explicitly separated from these labeled routes.
Medication form and route
oral; subcutaneous
Timing or duration
Source-specific single-dose, repeated-dose and observational exposures distinguished.

What remains uncertain

  • No exact-pair clinical toxicity study or validated separation interval. Animal methylxanthine findings in the label have unknown clinical significance, not a measured human caffeine interaction.

Factors that may matter: preparation and plant part; clinical indication; dose; other medicines; baseline alertness.

nccih.nih.gov · Source check Sep 10, 2026

Population: People considering the specified supplement.

Tea contains caffeine; concentrated extracts differ from beverages and have been linked to uncommon liver injury and increased blood pressure.

How this applies: Supplement-only context; explicit medication and preparation bridge required.

Does not establish a respiratory medication interaction or identical caffeine content across extracts.

Population: People considering the specified supplement.

Caffeine can cause palpitations, anxiety, sleep problems and other effects; sensitivity depends partly on medicines and individual factors.

How this applies: Supplement-only context; explicit medication and preparation bridge required.

General adult intake advice does not establish a safe caffeine limit with this medicine.

Source 5: original human study

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov · Source check Sep 10, 2026

Population: Normal subjects in a series of muscle-function experiments.

Small caffeine muscle effects; terbutaline did not improve respiratory or limb muscle performance.

How this applies: Only the named drug, preparation, route and measured endpoints apply.

Comparative experiments, not established combination treatment or safety; no exact caffeine-terbutaline toxicity estimate.
