The short answer

A combined B-vitamin trial found some longer-term benefits alongside antidepressant treatment, but it does not show that B12 alone improves citalopram absorption or that everyone needs supplements.

What this answer covers

Combined B12, folic acid and B6 intervention; not isolated B12 or routine dietary intake.

Supplement or preparation
Vitamin B12
Medication ingredient
citalopram

Three vitamins were tested together

The study enrolled 153 adults aged 50 or older and started citalopram with B12, folic acid and B6 or placebo. It cannot identify an isolated B12 effect.

Early and later results differed

There was no early remission advantage. Some later remission and relapse measures favored vitamins, while overall depression-score differences were not significant.

Longer follow-up had a medication limitation

After week 12, general practitioners could change the antidepressant. The later findings cannot all be attributed to unchanged citalopram treatment.

Use the result for a clinical discussion

The study did not measure citalopram absorption. Ask whether your nutritional status and depression care justify testing or supplementation; do not copy a trial regimen or adjust citalopram yourself.

Evidence and practical considerations

Absorption & effectiveness

Conditional evidence for a combined vitamin augmentation strategy, not B12 alone or altered absorption.

Exact scope
Combined B12, folic acid and B6 intervention; not isolated B12 or routine dietary intake. with Exact oral citalopram hydrobromide film-coated tablets. RxNorm IN2556 / PIN221078 hydrobromide tablets. Racemic citalopram is distinct from escitalopram.
Medication form and route
oral
Timing or duration
Source-specific single-dose, repeated-dose and observational exposures distinguished.

What remains uncertain

  • One trial, combined nutrients, no early efficacy advantage and possible antidepressant changes after week 12.

Factors that may matter: preparation and plant part; clinical indication; dose; other medicines; baseline alertness.

Population: 153 adults aged 50 or older with major depression.

No early remission advantage or significant overall depression-score difference; later remission and relapse outcomes favored the vitamin combination.

How this applies: Only the named drug, preparation, route and measured endpoints apply.

Not B12 alone. After week 12 general practitioners could change antidepressants. No citalopram absorption endpoint. Original abstract citalopram unit typo corrected using original methods.
