The short answer

Evidence does not establish that whole saffron changes citalopram absorption. A small crocin add-on trial suggests possible mood benefit, but it cannot define the effect of a saffron product with citalopram.

What this answer covers

Oral Crocus sativus versus isolated crocin; preparations and comparison designs distinguished.

Supplement or preparation
Crocus sativus
Medication ingredient
citalopram

Crocin is a specific constituent

A pilot trial tested isolated crocin with one of three antidepressants. Its pooled benefit does not establish what whole saffron will do with citalopram.

Comparison is different from combination

Another trial compared saffron against citalopram in separate groups. Similar outcomes do not demonstrate that using both is beneficial or safe.

Mood improvement does not measure absorption

Neither result establishes that saffron increases or reduces citalopram absorption. Do not adjust the medicine to compensate for an assumed interaction.

Keep medicine changes supervised

Do not increase citalopram to counter a supplement or change regular treatment on your own. Bring the complete ingredient list, amounts and recent changes to the prescriber.

Evidence and practical considerations

Absorption & effectiveness

Exact whole-saffron interaction remains insufficiently established; pooled crocin augmentation is preliminary.

Exact scope
Oral Crocus sativus versus isolated crocin; preparations and comparison designs distinguished. with Exact oral citalopram hydrobromide film-coated tablets. RxNorm IN2556 / PIN221078 hydrobromide tablets. Racemic citalopram is distinct from escitalopram.
Medication form and route
oral
Timing or duration
Source-specific single-dose, repeated-dose and observational exposures distinguished.

What remains uncertain

  • No citalopram subgroup, whole-plant equivalence or absorption measurement.

Factors that may matter: preparation and plant part; clinical indication; dose; other medicines; baseline alertness.

Research conclusion: insufficient evidence · Evidence assessment: low

Population: People prescribed oral citalopram.

Label names tryptophan and St John’s wort in serotonin warnings; dose-dependent QT and electrolyte precautions are distinct from sedation and nutritional augmentation.

How this applies: RxNorm IN2556 / PIN221078 hydrobromide tablets. Racemic citalopram is distinct from escitalopram.

No universal supplement interval, event rate or preparation equivalence established.

Population: Forty adults with major depression.

Pooled self-reported depression, anxiety and general-health scores improved more with crocin.

How this applies: Only the named drug, preparation, route and measured endpoints apply.

Mixed antidepressants without citalopram-specific outcome; isolated crocin is not whole saffron. Small short pilot with compliance limitations.

Population: Adults with major depression and anxious distress.

Similar improvement and reported side effects between groups.

How this applies: Only the named drug, preparation, route and measured endpoints apply.

Separate treatments, not combination safety, drug concentration or absorption evidence.
