Why the stress-test team asks about caffeine
The injection label warns that caffeine can block the coronary blood-vessel response to IV dipyridamole and produce a falsely reassuring scan. A small study in patients with previously positive tests demonstrated this after caffeine infusion. This is a diagnostic effect, not reduced absorption of an oral dose.
Tell the team about every caffeine source
Guarana seed contains caffeine, but the botanical name alone does not establish the plant part or amount in your product. Bring the product label and disclose recent use before testing. Do not assume a botanical preparation is caffeine-free because caffeine is not listed separately.
Follow the testing center’s preparation instructions
Follow the center’s specific caffeine restriction and contact it if you used a caffeine-containing product during that period. The early study’s proposed 24-hour interval was described as speculative, and a later observational study found residual caffeine in some people reporting 24-hour abstinence. These studies do not establish a universal guaranteed interval.
Keep oral treatment separate from test preparation
The oral tablet label concerns a different treatment setting, including use with warfarin after prosthetic valve replacement.
