The short answer

High caffeine intake may add to amantadine-related nervousness, insomnia or other stimulant-like symptoms. A universal caffeine-avoidance rule or protective spacing interval has not been established.

What this answer covers

Caffeine from drinks, supplements and combination products; amount and habitual use matter.

Supplement or preparation
Caffeine
Medication ingredient
amantadine

The label calls for observation with stimulants

Immediate-release amantadine labeling calls for careful observation when it is taken with CNS stimulants. Amantadine can itself cause nervousness or insomnia. This supports reviewing high caffeine intake without proving that every amount causes an interaction.

The human caffeine evidence is indirect

A caffeine-alone study found increased blood pressure in selected young men, with greater response in those with borderline hypertension. It did not test amantadine. No exact-pair event rate or safe caffeine threshold was established.

Avoidance and spacing are different claims

The inspected sources do not require all amantadine users to avoid caffeine, and do not show that taking it a few hours apart prevents symptoms. A stimulant precaution is not a proven drug-absorption interaction.

Review total intake if symptoms appear

Count caffeine from drinks and supplements and discuss changes if sleep, anxiety or palpitations worsen. Do not increase caffeine to counter drowsiness before driving, and do not change amantadine on your own.

Evidence and practical considerations

Timing & monitoring

Label recommends careful observation with stimulants, not mandatory caffeine avoidance or a demonstrated protective spacing interval. No exact human timing study identified.

Exact scope
Caffeine from drinks, supplements and combination products; amount and habitual use matter. with Oral amantadine hydrochloride immediate-release capsules; GOCOVRI extended-release considered separately.
Medication form and route
oral medication; oral supplement

What remains uncertain

  • No unmeasured pair incidence, blanket class transfer or arbitrary spacing interval.

Factors that may matter: Preparation; Dose; Other medicines; Organ function.

Research conclusion: insufficient evidence · Evidence assessment: very low

Population: People prescribed amantadine

May cause insomnia, agitation or somnolence; careful observation with CNS stimulants and other CNS-active medicines. Renal elimination and seizure-history precautions.

How this applies: Exact amantadine RxCUI 620 IN, with stated salt/formulation/route bridge.

No exact supplement-combination incidence or validated protective spacing; salt, route and release form limits apply.

Source 2: Original human study

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov · Source check Sep 10, 2026

Population: Forty-eight young men, half with borderline hypertension.

Caffeine raised pressure more in the borderline-hypertension group.

How this applies: Interpreted for amantadine only within the stated exact preparation and endpoint limits.

Caffeine-alone pressure study after abstinence in selected young men; not an amantadine combination, ordinary habitual intake study or timing experiment.
