Research summary published · Prepared · Editorial update

The short answer

There is no established requirement to separate zinc from caffeine by one hour. The reviewed animal experiment did not show reduced intestinal zinc absorption, but it does not settle the question for all human products.

What this answer covers

Oral zinc and caffeine; animal infusion experiments and tissue measurements do not directly establish human dosing advice.

Supplement or preparation
Zinc
Medication ingredient
caffeine

The original experiment was in rats

Researchers tested intestinal or intravenous caffeine and measured intestinal zinc uptake. The experiment did not find reduced zinc absorption under those conditions.

Tissue levels are a separate question

Some cardiac tissue zinc measurements changed after injected caffeine. A tissue finding does not establish that an oral supplement failed to absorb, and it cannot define a human dosing interval.

A null animal result is not a safety guarantee

The route, exposure and species differ from ordinary human use. No reliable one-hour intervention or universal human caffeine-zinc effect was established by this evidence.

Use the actual product instructions

Follow your zinc treatment plan and ask a pharmacist about other ingredients or medicines that may matter. Caffeine’s own warnings still apply; persistent fatigue is a reason for assessment rather than escalating stimulant use.

Evidence and practical considerations

Absorption & effectiveness

There is no established requirement to separate zinc from caffeine by one hour. The reviewed animal experiment did not show reduced intestinal zinc absorption, but it does not settle the question for all human products.

Exact scope
Oral zinc and caffeine; animal infusion experiments and tissue measurements do not directly establish human dosing advice. with Oral caffeine base; neonatal and intravenous caffeine citrate regimens excluded.
Medication form and route
oral

What remains uncertain

  • No human evidence validates one-hour separation; original animal study did not show reduced zinc absorption. Cardiac tissue changes are not proven intestinal malabsorption.

Factors that may matter: Exact preparation and amount; Total caffeine from all sources; Individual sensitivity and conditions.

Research conclusion: insufficient evidence · Evidence assessment: low

Population: People using oral caffeine as an occasional alertness aid.

Warns to limit additional caffeine because excessive intake can cause nervousness, insomnia and rapid heartbeat. Persistent fatigue warrants medical review.

How this applies: Exact active ingredient and oral route, with total-exposure precautions.

Not a neonatal caffeine-citrate or intravenous regimen. The tablet dosing interval is not a supplement-interaction spacing rule.

Source 2: Original animal experiment

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov · Source check Sep 10, 2026

Population: Anesthetized female rats.

Caffeine did not reduce intestinal zinc absorption; some cardiac tissue concentrations changed.

How this applies: Does not support a one-hour separation rule, while a null animal result cannot prove human safety.

Animal procedures, not routine human oral co-use. Original abstract only; publisher full text inaccessible.
