The strongest evidence concerns coffee

Studies found lower nonheme-iron absorption with coffee, including a trial using an oral iron dose in iron-depleted women. They did not isolate caffeine as the responsible ingredient.

Timing results cannot be generalized

One older meal study found different results when coffee was taken before versus after eating. It does not validate a one-to-two-hour interval for pure caffeine or all iron preparations.

The nutrient and beverage both matter

Dietary polyphenols can affect iron availability, and iron forms differ. Tell the pharmacist whether your caffeine comes from a tablet, coffee, tea or a mixed supplement so the actual exposure can be assessed.

Keep deficiency treatment individualized
