The short answer

Strobilanthes cusia has not been shown to reduce midazolam absorption or clinical effect in people. Laboratory findings for indigo-plant preparations do not establish this exact botanical interaction.

What this answer covers

Exact Strobilanthes cusia identity; not Strobilanthes crispus, every Ban-Lan-Gen source, indigo naturalis or isolated indirubin.

Supplement or preparation
Strobilanthes cusia
Medication ingredient
midazolam

The available experiment was not a human interaction trial

A study found increased CYP3A4 gene activity with Ban-Lan-Gen extract and indirubin in cells. It did not measure midazolam concentrations, sedation or effectiveness in patients.

The botanical name cannot be substituted

Ban-Lan-Gen can refer to roots from several indigo plants. An effect of an isolated constituent or an incompletely identified preparation cannot be assigned to every Strobilanthes cusia product.

An enzyme signal is not a clinical dose rule

Midazolam is sensitive to CYP3A changes, but the amount and duration of an in-person interaction must still be established. Its oral, injected and nasal formulations have different exposure pathways.

Disclose the preparation before treatment

Show the treating team the plant identity, part and product label. Do not increase midazolam or use an arbitrary spacing interval to compensate for this unproven interaction. Lack of direct evidence is not proof of safety.

Evidence and practical considerations

Absorption & effectiveness

Laboratory transcription signal lacks exact botanical preparation, human exposure and clinical endpoint evidence; no proven midazolam absorption/effectiveness decrease.

Exact scope
Exact Strobilanthes cusia identity; not Strobilanthes crispus, every Ban-Lan-Gen source, indigo naturalis or isolated indirubin. with Midazolam6960 IN; oral hydrochloride syrup, IV/IM hydrochloride and intranasal midazolam distinguished.
Medication form and route
oral medication; intravenous medication; intramuscular medication; intranasal medication; oral supplement

What remains uncertain

  • No unmeasured pair incidence, blanket class transfer or arbitrary spacing interval.

Factors that may matter: Preparation; Dose; Other medicines; Organ function.

Research conclusion: insufficient evidence · Evidence assessment: very low
