The short answer
Panax ginseng may affect glucose control. Review the product before combining it with exenatide; the exact added low-blood-sugar risk has not been measured.
What this answer covers
Asian ginseng root extracts, with berry and other Panax species distinguished.
- Supplement or preparation
- Panax ginseng
- Medication ingredient
- exenatide
What the human evidence shows
One small trial of a vinegar-extracted root product improved HbA1c at the lowest tested dose. A berry study had no overall glucose benefit, and acute Asian-ginseng findings were also inconsistent. These were not this medicine’s combination trials.
Why your treatment context matters
Exenatide particularly increases low-blood-sugar risk when combined with insulin or insulin-releasing medicines. It should not be assumed to behave like those medicines by itself. The prescriber should consider the full regimen, meals and prior low readings before deciding whether additional monitoring is useful.
Check the supplement preparation
Check species, root versus berry, extract and daily amount. American ginseng or a different extract cannot be treated as an equivalent exposure.
Keep the prescribed medicine plan
The reviewed BYETTA label is for twice-daily injections within the hour before the two main meals, not after them. Weekly exenatide has a different formulation and schedule. Follow the instructions for your actual product and do not move injections to compensate for a supplement.
Watch for low blood sugar
Follow your existing glucose-monitoring and low-blood-sugar treatment plan. New sweating, shakiness, hunger or confusion warrants a glucose check when possible. Severe confusion, a seizure or inability to swallow safely needs emergency help.
Evidence and practical considerations
Side effects & toxicity
Conditional glucose-monitoring concern follows from supplement glucose effects and the exact medicine context. This is not direct evidence of increased hypoglycemia or altered drug absorption.
- Exact scope
- Asian ginseng root extracts, with berry and other Panax species distinguished. with Exact exenatide immediate-release subcutaneous injection. Exact RxNorm IN60548 exenatide; immediate-release subcutaneous injection. Combination medicines are not assumed equivalent. Current BYETTA immediate-release label inspected. Weekly extended-release exenatide is outside this label scope; current DailyMed API retrieval for that product failed, so meal/dose instructions are not transferred.
- Medication form and route
- subcutaneous
- Timing or duration
- Source-specific single-dose, repeated-dose and observational exposures distinguished.
What remains uncertain
- No exact pair human interaction trial identified. Preparation-specific positive and null results do not establish a universal effect, safe dose, spacing rule or drug concentration change.
Factors that may matter: preparation and plant part; clinical indication; dose; other medicines; baseline glucose and nutrient status.

Population: People prescribed exenatide.
Glucose-dependent GLP1 action, increased hypoglycemia with insulin/secretagogues, gastrointestinal effects; premeal twice-daily BYETTA instructions.
How this applies: Exact RxNorm IN60548 exenatide; immediate-release subcutaneous injection. Combination medicines are not assumed equivalent. Current BYETTA immediate-release label inspected. Weekly extended-release exenatide is outside this label scope; current DailyMed API retrieval for that product failed, so meal/dose instructions are not transferred.
No universal supplement dose, interval, event rate or untested formulation equivalence.

Population: 72 drug-naive adults with type 2 diabetes.
The lowest tested dose showed an HbA1c benefit; no severe adverse events reported.
How this applies: Only the named original drug, preparation, route and endpoint apply; no untested exact medication transfer.
Small groups and no concomitant diabetes medicine. The extract is not equivalent to berry products or every commercial ginseng.
Source 3: Original human clinical study
pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov · Source check Sep 11, 2026
Population: 72 people randomized, 63 completing a 12-week trial.
No overall glycemic benefit in the full population; a higher-fasting-glucose subgroup showed some improvement.
How this applies: Only the named original drug, preparation, route and endpoint apply; no untested exact medication transfer.
Subgroup findings do not overturn the overall null result. Berry differs from root and is not a exenatide co-use study.
Source 4: Original human study
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov · Source check Sep 11, 2026
Population: Two small healthy-volunteer acute dose studies.
Overall incremental glucose and insulin measures were unchanged; one pooled two-hour glucose comparison was higher.
How this applies: Only the named original drug, preparation, route and endpoint apply; no untested exact medication transfer.
Acute studies without exenatide; extract composition and dose varied.
