The short answer

Magnesium products can interfere with oral sarecycline when they contain the mineral forms named in its instructions. The dosing interval depends on the product and, sometimes, which one you take first.

What this answer covers

Oral sarecycline with magnesium products. Mineral salt, amount, combination ingredients and medicine release formulation matter; food and concentrated supplements are not interchangeable.

Supplement or preparation
Magnesium
Medication ingredient
sarecycline

Check the exact oral medicine

This review applies to SEYSARA oral sarecycline tablets for acne. The tablets contain sarecycline hydrochloride in strengths expressed as sarecycline. Instructions from another tetracycline should not be substituted for its own product information.

What supports the concern

The SEYSARA label says specified mineral antacids and iron preparations may impair absorption. A multivitamin is relevant when it contains those minerals; a mineral-free vitamin is a different exposure. The precaution does not measure treatment failure in every user.

Use the right timing instruction

Current guidance says to take sarecycline four hours before or two hours after magnesium. The order matters. The product label gives a separation precaution without specifying the number of hours. The numeric schedule comes from medication-use guidance; it should not be reversed or presented as a trial-proven restoration of absorption.

Keep food and supplements distinct

A pooled analysis found lower exposure with a high-fat meal containing milk, but the modeled effect on acne lesions was small and not clinically meaningful. SEYSARA can be taken with or without food. This meal evidence does not test concentrated mineral supplements. Show all ingredients to the pharmacist and arrange the whole daily schedule. Do not skip or double antibiotic doses to compensate for a suspected interaction.

Evidence and practical considerations

Absorption & effectiveness

Named mineral products warrant an oral absorption/separation precaution, with formulation- and direction-specific timing.

Exact scope
Oral sarecycline with magnesium products. Mineral salt, amount, combination ingredients and medicine release formulation matter; food and concentrated supplements are not interchangeable. with RxNorm2059018 IN sarecycline. SEYSARA tablets contain hydrochloride equivalent to60,100 or150 mg sarecycline; not another tetracycline or a topical preparation.
Medication form and route
Oral

What remains uncertain

  • Exact oral-label/guidance precaution, not a uniform effect size or proof that every mineral form interacts. No unqualified interval across formulations or dosing order.

Factors that may matter: Exact oral release formulation; Mineral salt and combination ingredients; Dosing order and meals; Treatment indication.

Research conclusion: supported with conditions · Evidence assessment: moderate

dailymed.nlm.nih.gov · Source check Sep 10, 2026

Population: Patients prescribed the specified oral formulation.

Specified aluminum/calcium/magnesium antacids and iron may impair absorption; separate dosing. Can be taken with or without food; no numeric mineral gap in label.

How this applies: RxNorm2059018 IN sarecycline. SEYSARA tablets contain hydrochloride equivalent to 60, 100 or 150 mg sarecycline; not another tetracycline or a topical preparation.

No automatic zinc or mineral-free multivitamin extrapolation; food-exposure change is not demonstrated loss of acne efficacy.

Source 2: Original medication-use guidance

medlineplus.gov · Source check Sep 10, 2026

Population: Users of oral sarecycline.

Calcium/antacids several hours apart. Sarecycline four hours before or two after magnesium; iron product two hours before or four after sarecycline.

How this applies: RxNorm2059018 IN sarecycline. SEYSARA tablets contain hydrochloride equivalent to 60, 100 or 150 mg sarecycline; not another tetracycline or a topical preparation.

Practical guidance, not a trial proving every listed interval restores exposure. Direction and formulation matter.

Source 3: Original clinical research

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov · Source check Sep 10, 2026

Population: PK data from 562 subjects across 12 clinical studies, with acne exposure-response modeling.

Food reduced systemic exposure, but model-predicted change in acne lesion efficacy was small and not considered clinically meaningful.

How this applies: Only stated preparation, route and endpoint; clinical outcome and PK are distinct.

Industry-associated pooled modeling, not a randomized isolated calcium/zinc supplement interaction trial. Food mixture and simulated efficacy do not establish safety of concurrent concentrated minerals.
