The short answer

Magnesium products containing the listed mineral ions can reduce elvitegravir availability. For GENVOYA, separate the mineral medicine or supplement by at least two hours and continue taking the antiviral with food.

What this answer covers

Oral elvitegravir within GENVOYA or the specified boosted research regimens, with magnesium-containing products. Complete combination identity and mineral composition are retained.

Check the exact medicine and regimen

This review concerns oral elvitegravir in GENVOYA, a combination with cobicistat, emtricitabine and tenofovir alafenamide. Some original experiments used ritonavir-boosted elvitegravir instead. These regimens are not interchangeable, and the whole prescribed combination must stay intact.

Which products matter

GENVOYA’s instructions name magnesium, aluminum, calcium, iron and zinc ions, including relevant antacids, laxatives, supplements and multivitamins. A multivitamin is relevant because of its mineral ingredients; a mineral-free vitamin is a different product. The amount of an ingredient in a salt should not be confused with its elemental mineral amount.

What the original evidence shows

In healthy volunteers, simultaneous antacid dosing lowered ritonavir-boosted elvitegravir exposure. Staggering by at least two hours avoided a relevant change in that experiment. Famotidine and omeprazole conditions did not show the same problem, supporting mineral binding rather than a universal acid-reducer effect.

Use the complete treatment schedule

For GENVOYA, leave at least two hours between the antiviral and the listed mineral products. Continue its food instruction. Have the pharmacist arrange all components and supplements together; do not stop the booster, change one component or double a dose to compensate for suspected reduced absorption.

Evidence and practical considerations

Absorption & effectiveness

The GENVOYA label supports at least two-hour separation from named polyvalent-mineral products; clinical study evidence distinguishes binding from a broad stomach-pH effect.

Exact scope
Oral elvitegravir within GENVOYA or the specified boosted research regimens, with magnesium-containing products. Complete combination identity and mineral composition are retained. with RxNorm 1306286 IN elvitegravir. Current source is GENVOYA fixed combination elvitegravir/cobicistat/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide; not an unboosted standalone regimen. Original ritonavir-boosted experimental exposure explicitly distinguished.
Medication form and route
Oral

What remains uncertain

  • Exact combination-label instruction, with original boosted-regimen study and conditional mineral-class bridge. No standalone elvitegravir inference or salt-by-salt failure probability.

Factors that may matter: Exact oral regimen and formulation; Booster or fixed-combination context; Mineral preparation and dosing order; Food requirements.

Population: Patients prescribed the specified oral regimen.

Separate named polyvalent-cation products by at least two hours. Hypericum is contraindicated because induction may lower component exposure and cause loss of response/resistance.

How this applies: RxNorm 1306286 IN elvitegravir. Current source is GENVOYA fixed combination elvitegravir/cobicistat/emtricitabine/tenofovir alafenamide; not an unboosted standalone regimen. Original ritonavir-boosted experimental exposure explicitly distinguished.

Cannot assign all fixed-combination findings to isolated unboosted elvitegravir. Preparation, dose and booster context matter.

Source 2: Original clinical research

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov · Source check Sep 10, 2026

Population: Healthy volunteers in four pharmacokinetic studies.

Simultaneous antacid reduced elvitegravir exposure; at least two-hour separation avoided relevant changes. Famotidine/omeprazole conditions had no relevant effect.

How this applies: Exact reported regimen, preparation and endpoints only; other drugs or forms remain indirect.

Abstract-only; original boosted regimens differ from complete GENVOYA. Antacid mixture not every individual mineral; no blanket pH effect or transferable clinical failure rate.
