What the horsetail study measured
A study in 36 healthy men tested a particular horsetail aerial-part extract for four days. It increased urine-related fluid loss compared with placebo, but did not significantly change urinary sodium or potassium excretion. Participants were not taking lithium, and the study did not measure lithium levels.
Why that does not prove a lithium interaction
Some prescription diuretics increase lithium levels by changing kidney handling of sodium. A similar urine-volume effect does not prove that horsetail acts the same way. The horsetail study cannot establish increased lithium absorption, toxicity risk, or a safe dose for someone taking lithium.
Review the exact product and purpose
Show your pharmacist the species, plant part, extract strength and other ingredients before using horsetail, especially for fluid loss or weight control. Lithium needs a consistent fluid and salt plan. There is no established spacing interval that makes this combination safe, and the short study does not establish safety with kidney disease.
