The short answer
Confirm the species in this valerian-root product before using it with asenapine. Its inventory name does not establish which evidence applies.
What this answer covers
Radix et Rhizoma Valerianae: exact species and preparation unresolved; V. officinalis findings apply only after identity confirmation.
- Supplement or preparation
- Radix et Rhizoma Valerianae
- Medication ingredient
- asenapine
Confirm the root identity
Ask the pharmacist to verify the Latin species, root or rhizome, extract and other ingredients. A generic valerian-root name is insufficient to establish Valeriana officinalis.
A metabolic study is not a sedation trial
A valerian study using alprazolam as an enzyme probe did not establish a large metabolic interaction. It cannot determine alertness effects with asenapine or show that every valerian extract behaves alike.
Identify the complete product
Bring the amount, preparation and other ingredients to the pharmacist. These sources do not provide a universal safe dose or a protective gap between the supplement and medicine.
Watch for impaired alertness
Asenapine can affect alertness and coordination. Avoid driving if affected and contact the prescriber if added sleepiness, confusion or unsteadiness appears after a new product. Severe confusion, fainting or inability to wake needs urgent assessment.
Route does not settle supplement safety
Patch and sublingual asenapine have different concentration profiles. Small route studies found variable somnolence; they did not test this supplement or prove the patch eliminates impairment.
Evidence and practical considerations
Side effects & toxicity
Exact unidentified-root interaction remains insufficiently established; product confirmation and conditional alertness review are appropriate.
- Exact scope
- Radix et Rhizoma Valerianae: exact species and preparation unresolved; V. officinalis findings apply only after identity confirmation. with Exact asenapine maleate sublingual tablets or asenapine transdermal system, distinguished by route. Exact RxNorm IN784649; SAPHRIS maleate sublingual tablet and SECUADO asenapine transdermal system distinguished. Do not assign swallowed-tablet or sublingual food/drink instructions to the patch.
- Medication form and route
- sublingual; transdermal
- Timing or duration
- Source-specific single-dose, repeated-dose and observational exposures distinguished.
What remains uncertain
- No exact-pair co-use trial identified; standalone or other-medicine findings and product differences prevent a uniform risk estimate.
Factors that may matter: preparation and plant part; clinical indication; dose; other medicines; baseline alertness.

dailymed.nlm.nih.gov · Source check Sep 10, 2026
Population: People prescribed asenapine.
Somnolence, orthostatic and QT precautions. UGT1A4 and CYP1A2 major metabolism; no dose adjustment advised with CYP3A4 inducers based on PK studies. Do not eat or drink for ten minutes after a sublingual dose.
How this applies: Exact asenapine maleate sublingual route; patch instructions require the separate SECUADO label.
No supplement-specific event rate, universal timing rule or untested route/preparation equivalence.
Source 2: official guidance
nccih.nih.gov · Source check Sep 10, 2026
Population: People considering the specified supplement.
Possible but unproven sleep-inducing effect; advises against use with alcohol or sedatives. Mental dullness can occur; long-term safety is uncertain.
How this applies: Preparation-specific evidence; exact asenapine co-use is not inferred from another medicine or route.
No asenapine interaction trial. Chronic use can be followed by withdrawal symptoms when stopped abruptly.
Source 3: original human study
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov · Source check Sep 10, 2026
Population: Twelve healthy volunteers.
Alprazolam peak concentration increased modestly, but AUC and elimination half-life did not change significantly.
How this applies: Preparation-specific evidence; exact asenapine co-use is not inferred from another medicine or route.
PK study is not a clinical sedation safety trial. Exact extract/species cannot resolve an unidentified valerian-root inventory item.

dailymed.nlm.nih.gov · Source check Sep 10, 2026
Population: Adults with schizophrenia prescribed asenapine patches.
Somnolence, cognitive/motor, orthostatic and QT precautions; clinical interaction data include studies of sublingual asenapine.
How this applies: Exact ingredient in a distinct transdermal formulation; route bridge kept explicit.
No exact supplement interaction study; sublingual food/drink interval cannot be assigned to the patch.
Source 5: original human study
pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov · Source check Sep 10, 2026
Population: Three phase-1 studies in healthy adults and adults with schizophrenia.
Patch produced smoother concentrations and lower peaks; somnolence varied among studies and was not uniformly absent.
How this applies: Only the named drug, preparation, route and measured endpoints apply.
No supplement co-use; small PK studies do not establish a universal sedation advantage or combination safety.
