Can I take Protein with Rilpivirine?

Review Protein with Rilpivirine: absorption and effectiveness, preparation details, evidence limits, and sources.

The short answer

Take oral rilpivirine with a meal. A protein drink alone does not replace that meal; the evidence does not establish that protein itself must be avoided or separated from rilpivirine.

What this answer covers

Protein-rich nutritional drinks in relation to oral rilpivirine’s meal requirement. Protein as a nutrient and long-acting injected rilpivirine are different questions.

Check the exact medicine and regimen

This review applies to oral rilpivirine products such as EDURANT. The adult tablet and pediatric dispersible tablets have different instructions and cannot simply be swapped by milligram amount. Long-acting injections do not share this stomach-absorption exposure. Keep the prescribed combination and meal plan.

The study compared meal conditions

Healthy volunteers received a single oral rilpivirine dose with different breakfasts or a protein-rich drink alone. Exposure with the drink alone was about half that with the normal-fat breakfast, while the normal- and high-fat breakfasts were similar. The study tested replacement of a meal, not protein added to an adequate meal.

Routine treatment also depends on eating

A small study in adults with HIV found lower steady-state exposure when the combination tablet was taken fasting. Low- and moderate-fat meals were broadly comparable, and viral suppression remained unchanged over the short study. The current oral label requires a meal and says a protein drink or yogurt alone is insufficient.

Fit supplements around a real meal

If you need a protein supplement, discuss how it fits your normal meals and medication. Do not stop needed nutrition, take rilpivirine fasting or invent a protein-spacing interval. A product containing mineral antacids or other active ingredients requires a separate ingredient review.

Evidence and practical considerations

Absorption & effectiveness

Replacing the required meal with a protein-rich drink lowers oral exposure, but this does not support a blanket protein avoidance or timing claim.

Exact scope
Protein-rich nutritional drinks in relation to oral rilpivirine’s meal requirement. Protein as a nutrient and long-acting injected rilpivirine are different questions. with RxNorm 1102270 IN rilpivirine. Oral hydrochloride EDURANT 25 mg tablets and separately dosed EDURANT PED suspension tablets; not long-acting injectable rilpivirine or automatic fixed-combination substitution.

Oral

What remains uncertain

  • Meal-substitution evidence, not intrinsic protein antagonism or all-protein supplement interaction. Single-dose study used 75 mg; steady-state study was small and short. Oral versus injectable route explicit.

Factors that may matter: Exact oral regimen and formulation; Booster or fixed-combination context; Mineral preparation and dosing order; Food requirements.

Population: Patients prescribed the specified oral regimen.

Antacids at least two hours before or four hours after oral rilpivirine. Hypericum contraindicated. Protein drink/yogurt alone does not substitute for meal.

How this applies: RxNorm 1102270 IN rilpivirine. Oral hydrochloride EDURANT 25 mg tablets and separately dosed EDURANT PED suspension tablets; not long-acting injectable rilpivirine or automatic fixed-combination substitution.

Oral pH/food instructions do not apply automatically to injection. Mineral antacid activity, not elemental name alone, is relevant.

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov · Source check Sep 10, 2026

Population: Healthy volunteers in randomized crossover.

Protein drink alone yielded half the exposure of normal breakfast; high-fat and normal breakfast exposure similar.

How this applies: Exact reported regimen, preparation and endpoints only; other drugs or forms remain indirect.

Abstract-only, higher single dose than routine 25 mg. Drink replacing a meal is not evidence that protein itself antagonizes the drug or that all protein supplements must be avoided.

Source 3: Original clinical research

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov · Source check Sep 10, 2026

Population: HIV-positive Ugandan adults receiving rilpivirine-based therapy.

Meal-dependent exposure assessed during clinical therapy.

How this applies: Exact reported regimen, preparation and endpoints only; other drugs or forms remain indirect.

Abstract-only; meal context cannot establish every protein isolate or mineral interaction.
