The short answer

No required MSM spacing or general avoidance rule with mefenamic acid is established. Review the full joint-supplement label and follow the prescription’s duration limits.

What this answer covers

Oral purified methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) with oral mefenamic acid capsules, explicitly bridged to mefenamate IN.

Supplement or preparation
Dimethyl sulfone
Medication ingredient
mefenamate

The MSM trial did not test this combination

A knee-osteoarthritis trial studied purified MSM for 12 weeks, with NSAID users undergoing a ten-day washout before enrollment. That design does not establish a safe interval between MSM and mefenamic acid doses or demonstrate harm from their combination.

Benefits and safety remain limited

Some symptom and function measures improved in the small MSM trial, but the authors considered the clinical importance uncertain. Allocation and baseline differences limit confidence. The study cannot establish long-term combination safety or justify replacing prescribed treatment.

Check what you are taking

The tested product supplied 3.375 g of purified MSM daily. Multi-ingredient joint supplements may contain additional botanicals or pain relievers with separate concerns. Show the full label to the pharmacist and avoid treating similarly named sulfur-containing substances as equivalent.

Follow the prescription’s treatment limits

The mefenamic acid label limits acute-pain treatment to no more than seven days and also covers primary dysmenorrhea. Review ongoing pain with the prescriber rather than extending treatment because a supplement was added. Seek urgent assessment for signs of GI bleeding.

Evidence and practical considerations

Timing & monitoring

A required separation interval or general avoidance rule for MSM with mefenamic acid has not been established.

Exact scope
Oral purified methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) with oral mefenamic acid capsules, explicitly bridged to mefenamate IN. with Exact mefenamate IN 257844 linked by current RxNorm to mefenamic acid PIN 6693. The inspected oral acid capsules supply the explicit ingredient bridge, not meclofenamate or a different fenamate.
Medication form and route
Oral

What remains uncertain

  • MSM trial required NSAID washout before enrollment, not a tested coadministration interval. Sulfur-containing names do not establish a shared interaction.

Factors that may matter: Exact preparation and dose; Fasting versus fed dosing; Bleeding and ulcer history; Other medicines.

Research conclusion: insufficient evidence · Evidence assessment: low

Population: Prescription oral oral mefenamic acid 250 mg capsules users; short human pharmacology studies where described.

Short-term acute pain up to seven days and primary dysmenorrhea indications. Serious GI warnings; magnesium hydroxide raises peak concentration and AUC in a small human study.

How this applies: Exact current product label. Exact mefenamate IN 257844 linked by current RxNorm to mefenamic acid PIN 6693. The inspected oral acid capsules supply the explicit ingredient bridge, not meclofenamate or a different fenamate.

Exact oral product label; no measured botanical co-use incidence. Ingredient, route, preparation and comparator differences must be retained.

Source 2: Original clinical research

pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov · Source check Sep 10, 2026

Population: 50 adults with knee osteoarthritis assigned to MSM or placebo.

Some symptom/function measures improved, but the authors judged improvements small and of uncertain clinical importance.

How this applies: Indirect for oral mefenamic acid 250 mg capsules co-use; exact preparation and endpoint retained.

Full original body inspected. Predictable allocation, baseline imbalance and limited safety assessment. Concurrent anticoagulant/antiplatelet users excluded; not a mefenamic-acid interaction or spacing study.
